Puja service at the main shrine to Sri Bhuvarahaswami Sannidhi and in the subsidiary shrines attached there to has been rendered by Sri Vaishnavas of the southern sect known as Thengalai school. The mode of puja is as ordained by the Pancharata agamas, especially by the Pancharata agamas, especially by the Padma Sambhita mantra-pushpa, Purana Patana, Vedaparanyanam, and chanting Tamil prabandahs are performed by those who have the rights to rendering such service. Mantrapuspha, Vedhaparayana and adhya bhaga are performed by Sri Vaishnavited, belonging to both schools the northern and the southern sects, (Vadakalai and Thenkalai) and have their rights established. Besides these, madhava brahmins also have the right to participate in Vedaparayana. The reciting of Madhava puranam and the reading of Gajendra Moksha are the special privileges on the Madhvas, while right of reciting the Vaishnava Purana belongs to Vadakalais. The first Mandra Pushpa-Acharyapurusha or the holder is Vadakalai, who also has the right to participate in reading Kaisika Purana, along with his service of mantrapushpam.
This place also had its share of disputes between Vadakali and Thenkalai Sri Vaishnavities; but they have been once for all set at rest by the orders of the Sub-Court of South Arcot at Cuddalore. In the appeal suit A.S,1/38, and the two groups commence the Tamil prabandha recitation simultaneously by invoking their respective acharyas and end with a commemoration of their respective preceptors and celebrate Sathumurai. This practice obtains in all the shrines of this temple and has the sanction of the decisions of the civil and criminal courts.
The main Brahmotsavas are conducted twice a year.
In the month of Masi(a nine day festival is celebrated and the Deity is taken in procession to the sea 30 miles away near Killai). In Chitrai)
In Chitrai(April/May) a nine day festival and on the closing day, the full moon day, Thirthavari are conducted.This festival is reputed to be specially scared. At noon on the closing day, the Lord and Bhudevi are said to perform Jalakrida in the Nityapushkarini; all the holly waters of the world are said to mingle in this Pushkarini then. Then a bath here on the occasion is said to rid a person from all sins. Other festivals are conducted every month.
PIt is customary to bestow special honours on rulers and heads of mutts who visit this temple for worship. The Satari of the Lord would be taken in procession to the four-pillared mandapam in front of the temple on such occasion and distinguished visitors would be welcomed, taken into the shrine and facilities offered for worship. Ofcourse, they would make munificient offerings to the Lord. Rulers of States and heads of religious organisations such as the Head of Ahobila Mutt, Sri Vanamamalai Mutt, Sri Parakala Mutt, Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashram, Sri Sarada Pitam, Sri Uttaradi Mutt, Vyasaraya Mutt, Sri Kamakoti Pitam and the like have been honoured in this fashion. Among heads of religious organisations, the head of the Uttaradi Mutt enjoys some speical rights. After worship in the temple, as the head of the Mutt returns to his Mutt, the lord Yagnavaraha is taken with him in procession, thereto, and aradhana is done by him to Sri Yagnavaraha and his Swami. This unique custom is not found in any other Vishnu temple. Similarly Sri Yagnavaraha with his consorts are taken to Sri Ahobila mutt after the Chitra Car festival and special Thiru manjanam and Sevai and Sathumurai performed and the deity is then taken to the temple.
